Light

When it comes to lighting schemes, don’t underestimate the value of a well-placed and elegant table lamp. Of course, the primary purpose of a lamp is to provide illumination where you need it, but when incorporated correctly, they can bring atmosphere, symmetry, colour, contrast and texture to any room. In other words, table lamps have an important job to do, but they should look good while doing it!

The first step is to identify the spot and then look for the right table lamp, rather than vice-versa – if you buy the lamp and then try to find a place for it, it will be harder to position well. But what does the “right” table lamp look like? Things to consider include height and size, which should all be determined by the room the table lamp will be placed in and the piece of furniture it will sit on or next to. A too small lamp on a large sideboard or a very large lamp on a small side table will make both pieces look unbalanced.

Style also matters: table lamps can be simple or glamorous, modern or classic, sculptural or streamlined – whichever look you choose will depend on whether you want the table lamp to match the room’s decor or if you want to take the opportunity to add something unexpected. Additionally, you might want to think creatively about positioning. Lamps are naturally placed on side tables, bedside tables, desks, sideboards and consoles, but they can also be tucked into bookcases, placed on kitchen counters and used to adorn dining tables – all you really need is access to a socket.
